Conceived as a visual and conceptual translation of sound, it reproduces the lyrics of songs reportedly used by CIA interrogators during the torture of prisoners at the U.S.-operated Guantánamo Bay detention camp. The book exposes the use of loud, repetitive music as a psychological torture technique associated with acoustic bombardment, extreme stress, and sleep deprivation. Its eclectic repertoire ranges from Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” to Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” and the children’s song “Sunny Day” from Sesame Street.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBy stripping these songs of their sound and presenting their lyrics as printed matter, Allora and Calzadilla transform an ostensibly familiar cultural archive into a stark political document. The book is a powerful example of how the artists use absence and silence to evoke violence: a publication that, paradoxically, seems to make more noise through silence than an audiobook could.
