Metabooks is a research-based platform dedicated to artists’ books, anchored in a collection of thousands of rare editions dating from the 1950s to the present. Conceived as an evolving archive, Metabooks is renewed weekly through new research, writing, and content, with the long-term goal of documenting more than 2,000 existing titles.
The collection focuses on rare and out-of-print first editions that trace key moments in the development of artists’ publishing, from early conceptual experiments to contemporary practices. Assembled over years of research and collecting, it brings together significant works that explore the book as an artistic medium. Each publication is "reactivated" online through photographs, videos, and descriptions, transforming a private collection into a publicly accessible resource for researchers, publishers, artists, and anyone interested in the history of artists’ books.
Metabooks Publications is an independent imprint exploring the book as an artwork in its own right through meta-publications: books that emerge from other books in the collection.
Releasing approximately one title per year, the imprint revisits the collection through new forms of publication, creating connections between historical sources and contemporary editorial practices.
