Like other prominent artists of his generation, including Noah Purifoy and Ed Ruscha, Allen Ruppersberg was trained at the Chouinard Art Institute. A pioneer of Conceptual art, he has divided his time between Los Angeles and New York, crystallizing a practice spanning painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and artists’ books.


 


The second in a numerical series, “24 Pieces” is illustrated with twenty-four black-and-white photographs of hotel interiors in Los Angeles, most of them in Hollywood, paired with unexpected urban juxtapositions. Each photographic tandem is followed by a blank double-page spread, creating a visual rhythm throughout the book. Designed by Gary Krueger, who also took the photographs, this spare artist’s book is characteristic of Ruppersberg’s minimal practice.


 


In dialogue with Ruppersberg’s earlier “23 Pieces”, this publication offers a psychogeographical perspective on Los Angeles at a defining moment in the history of Conceptual art.
