The seminal Fluxus compilation An Anthology, edited by La Monte Young and Jackson Mac Low and designed by George Maciunas, was published in two versions, in 1963 and 1970.
Slightly smaller than the second edition, this rare first version was self-published by the editors. Its significance lies in literally binding together, for the first time, the emerging Fluxus constellation: George Brecht, Claus Bremer, Earle Brown, Joseph Byrd, John Cage, David Degener, Walter De Maria, Henry Flynt, Yoko Ono, Dick Higgins, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Terry Jennings, Dennis, Ding Dong, Ray Johnson, Jackson Mac Low, Richard Maxfield, Robert Morris, Simone Morris, Nam June Paik, Terry Riley, Dieter Rot, James Waring, Emmett Williams, Christian Wolff, and La Monte Young.
Their diverse exercises in style articulate the aesthetic of Fluxus, encoded by Maciunas in the rotated typographic pages at the beginning: chance operations, concept, anti-art, indeterminacy, improvisation, meaningless work, natural disaster, essays, poetry & plays.
The Getty Research Institute holds a preliminary version of An Anthology of Chance Operations, a unique handbound example that predates the standard 1963 publication.
