Artist’s books constitute a substantial component of Alison Knowles’s artistic production. As the only female founding member of the Fluxus movement in 1961, she developed an artistic philosophy that found expression equally in her performative and sculptural works and in her editorial projects. Seminal artist’s books punctuate her career, including The Bean Rolls (1963), Loose Pages (1983), The Finger Book of Ancient Language (1987), and The Boat Book (2014), not to mention her extensions of the book form into performative and installation-based works, such as The Big Book (1967) and The House of Dust (1967).

Published in 1977 as the result of Knowles’s collaboration with an independent Danish small press specializing in experimental literature, poetry, and Fluxus-related art, 7 Dages Forløb documents, quite literally, seven days of walking along the beach, from March 14 to March 20, 1977. The work takes the form of a diaristic record on loose sheets, each illustrated with the same image of a photocopied shoe sole and accompanied by a short text describing the weather conditions on that particular day. The underlying concept of the project is revealed by the artist in a disclaimer on the first page:

“Sunday December 12 1976 on the beach of the Bay of Naples the weather was bright and sunny with no clouds during the morning, shifting to cool and windy in the late afternoon. There was a chance of rain but the evening turned out to be clear and quite cold. This half-sole was found during the morning hours between 10 and 12 a.m. while walking south west from the long fishing pier on the shore that runs parallel to the Via Caracciolo. Alison Knowles, Jan. 77”

A timepiece in its own right, 7 Dages Forløb is reminiscent of Fluxus, dissolving the boundaries between art and everyday life while embracing chance operations.
