This enigmatic artist’s book was made in collaboration with Felipe Ehrenberg and followed by an experimental film directed by Michale Leggett, which premiered in September of the same year at the International Festival of Avant-Garde Film in London.


 


Using found photographs from the 1920s and ’30s alongside two handwritten poems in an Alexandrian Greek dialect, Leggett developed a chance-based method of pairing randomly selected words with images, producing a fragmented and nonlinear narrative. The photographs and poems were discovered following the death of Leggett’s great-aunt Tina and became the basis for both works. The poems were translated into English by Peter Foster-Marr, who did not know the original language; nouns and verbs from his translation were then randomly selected and paired with photographs from the found collection.


 


Published by Beau Geste Press in an edition of 200 copies, the book is designed to be read from either end, with its two sequences unfolding in opposite directions. The accompanying film similarly extends this experimental approach to the relationship between text, chance, and image.
