This publication is not only a catalogue raisonné of Martin Kippenberger’s posters up to 1983, but also a subtle act of appropriation at its most incisive, with a “clin d’œil” to Stanley Brouwn’s seminal artist’s book “This Way Brouwn”, published by Walther König eighteen years earlier. Whereas Brouwn’s cover records the dates of his two-day performative intervention in Amsterdam in February 1971, Kippenberger replaces them with his own birth date, written in the same concise format: 25.2.53. This playful gesture encapsulates Kippenberger’s practice of recontextualisation while paying homage to an important artistic precedent.
