Jarosław Kozłowski is one of the most influential Polish conceptual artists of his generation. For more than six decades, his practice has been marked by an obsessive investigation into language and time. Since the late 1980s, the representation of time and the concept of spacetime have been recurrent topics in his work: Yellow Time, Red Time, Blue Time (1988); Blue Fragments III (1990); Personal Files (1993); Time Declensions (1995); Time Vacuum II (1997); Cistern of Time (2006); and Archive of Time (2015).

This artist’s book belongs to the broader series Exercises in Color (1988-89), which exists in both unique photographic work and artist’s book. It comprises eight photographs of wristwatches with their displays painted in a Baldessari-like palette of colours, accompanied by descriptive captions indicating the positions of the clock hands. Minimal yet sophisticated, the book anticipates by more than two decades Christian Marclay’s The Clock (2010) and Caragh Thuring’s Watch (2014), both of which are part of the Metabooks collection.
