One of the wittiest books in the collection, Martin Parr’s Be Bold with Bananas unfolds as a suite of exuberant recipes in which vernacular design, food photography, and advertising converge in a veritable salad of visual excess. Parr reworks a 64-page book published in 1972 by Fruit Distributors Limited for Banana Importers of Wellington, New Zealand. Printed in Cape Town and distributed in Australia by the Banana Growers Association, it promoted Pacific Island bananas as an ideal food for any time of day. Reflecting on his discovery of the original publication, Parr wrote: “I was immediately struck when I saw Be Bold with Bananas. It had some wonderful sexual undertones, and was just plain surreal. The title is also very ambivalent.” His intervention replaces the original cover and inserts a small photographic print depicting bananas, transforming the publication into a contemporary exercise in the visual pleasures of food porn.
