Loosely translated from the Dutch as “in the newspaper”, this publication is at once conceptual, witty, and performative. The work consists of reproductions of newspaper articles in which Hans Eijkelboom managed to have himself photographed over ten consecutive days in 1976. Sometimes appearing in the centre of the picture, sometimes in the background, he was always present at the scene of a news event that would ultimately find its way into the pages of the local newspapers. Described by Federica Ciochetti as “a photobomber avant la lettre”, Eijkelboom explains in an interview with the curator for Palm, the magazine of the Jeu de Paume:


 


“Nowadays, it would be very problematic, but at that time it was not so difficult. Every day in the newspaper there was an agenda of what was going to happen the next day: a list of important events, between eight and ten. I would go to all eight/ten events, and one of them would work. Also, I listened to the police radio and, as soon as they reported an accident, I would rush to the place with my bike to stand among the public near the accident.”
