Trained in fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Katrien De Blauwer abandoned her studies to develop a paraphotographic practice that moves beyond traditional collage. An avid image collector and passionate iconographer, she explores the iconography of femininity in fashion magazines, rearranging found images through a technique closer to cinematic montage than to collage. Fragments of magazines and vernacular photographs are rethought to create new relationships between gesture, body, fashion, and the unconscious. Through carefully choreographed compositions and publications, De Blauwer develops a new aesthetic of the fragmentary. “Inappropriate Repetitions” is her first artist’s book.
