This folder documents the body of nine actions titled “JOINT-ACTIONS”, performed by Christian Lindow and Clément Borlat between different cities in 1969. The happenings consisted of synchronised acts performed by the two artists at a predetermined date and time, while situated in separate locations: Montreux–Bern (17 June), Rome–Bern (27 June), Rome–Bern–Paris–Mannheim (25 June–15 July), and others.


 


The gestures were generally simple and precisely defined: pointing towards the partner’s location, recording an action taking place in the present, switching on the radio, signing a postcard, and so forth. Action VII was included in the catalogue “Operationen im Museum Fridericianum Kassel 1969” and consisted of the simultaneous reproduction of the artists’ identity cards in different locations: Borlat in Clarens-Montreux and Lindow in Bern.


 


Between 16 July and 11 October, the artists subsequently reenacted the event inside the Fridericianum Museum, involving 26 visitors. The performative series culminated in Munich between 18 October and 18 November with a sequence of gestures titled “Joint-Action IX”, probably the best known, in which visitors were given the freedom to determine their own synchronised actions.


 


The folder contains instructions for each of the nine actions, photographs, correspondence, logistical details, and a loose manifesto-letter sent by Lindow and Borlat to Kunsthalle Bern on 22 October 1969. The letter opens in a philosophical register, loosely translated here from the German: “We understand creativity to be the realisation of a consciousness found in spontaneous contact with activities and passivities of our lives”.
