Based on the principles of mail art, Kryptogame was a short-lived assembling magazine based in Bremen, edited by Hanna Bremer and Jack Marlow. Across its three issues, all published in 1980, the editors features visual poetry, rubber-stamp works, drawings, and collages from an international network of avant-garde artists, including Opal Louis Nations, Dick Higgins, Dorothea Tanning, Salvo, Robin Crozier, Michel Corfou, Genesis P-Orridge, and his industrial music band Throbbing Gristle, among many others.
Built entirely on collaboration and the physical exchange of mail, the periodical was assembled from stacks of pages submitted by participating artists, arranged in a non-hierarchical layout. Kryptogame has since become part of the history of countercultural publishing. Extremely scarce, the magazine is held in museum and academic collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Alternative Traditions in the Contemporary Arts collection at the University of Iowa, and the Marilyn R. Rosenberg Collection at The Ohio State University.
Metabooks holds a complete set of all three issues. This is issue no. 2.
