Giovanni Anselmo’s first artist’s book is a conceptual tautology in the form of visual poetry. In this first edition, the word “leggere” (to read) is graphically articulated across the pages in progressively changing type sizes, appearing once per page until it gradually dissolves into the whiteness of the page. The sequence then reverses, with the word re-emerging and increasing in scale until the page is ultimately saturated by the black of the type.


 


A minimal novel of the absurd, the work collapses the distinction between the act of reading and the text being read, making reading itself both the subject and the material of the book. A French edition, “Lire”, followed in 1990, and a second Italian edition was published by Castello di Rivoli in 2016.
