Mladen Stilinović (1947–2016) was a Croatian conceptual artist whose multidisciplinary approach encompassed photography, collage, artists’ books, film, painting, and text-based works. A founding member of the Group of Six Artists, active in Zagreb from 1975, he critically examined the relationships between language, ideology, power, money, work, and everyday life, often employing irony, paradox, and visual appropriation. Through an experimental and politically incisive practice, Stilinović became a significant figure in the development of conceptual art in the former Yugoslavia.

This unique book embodies this artistic philosophy. Resonating with his earlier series of works, Aware of the Art of Painting (1975), Oslobađanje od znanja (Liberation from Knowledge) consists of a suite of eleven white-on-white painted symbols and words, each captioned with the Croatian phrase “svjestan bjeline”, meaning “consciously white”. The handcrafted, staple-bound volume not only reflects on the fleeting nature of signs – and, by extension, knowledge – but also functions as a self-reflexive object in its own right.

Oslobađanje od znanja sits in the Metabooks collection alongside other unique books by Stilinović, including Crveno – Roza (1979) and U vlastitom interesu (late 1970s).
