In 1962, shortly before his sudden death at the age of 29, Piero Manzoni conceived two major publications. The first, “8 Tavole di accertamento” (8 Works of Verification), was published by Vanni Scheiwiller in Milan that same year; the second was a para-biography titled “Piero Manzoni. Life and Work”. Designed by the artist before his death in February 1963 as an all-blank book, the latter was published posthumously, with the name of its publisher, Jes Petersen, appearing prominently above the title on the cover. “An announcement published in that period declared that Jes Petersen was the author of the work ‘Piero Manzoni. The Life and the Works’, composed of ‘around 100 pages’, with a format of 17 x 12 centimetres, published in sixty copies: in reality it was only in 1963 that Petersen distributed ‘Piero Manzoni. Life and Works’, produced on sheets of translucent acetate and bound with a spine, in the same format and in an edition of sixty copies (a new edition was to be published in 1969).”


 


The account clarifies the deliberate confusion, orchestrated by Manzoni himself, between author and publisher, an ambiguity that forms an integral part of the work’s conceptual and bibliographic character.
