Hans-Peter Feldmann’s Profil continues the iconographic investigations of his earlier work Bilder (1968-1974), offering a critical and political study in which images speak louder than words. Published in collaboration with Museum in Progress and Profil magazine, the project had a long gestation and was originally planned for late February 2000. However, the volatile political situation in Austria prompted Feldmann to publish it a few weeks earlier. In his détournement of the February 7, 2000, issue of Profil, Feldmann retained the original layout but removed all text, advertisements, and non-photographic illustrations, allowing the images to speak for themselves and reveal the many facets of politics, from representation and accountability to corruption, abuse of power, and oppression.
