Since 2001, Salon Verlag has invited more than thirty artists to transform existing publications of their choice into artist’s books in the fullest sense of the term. For each title, Salon Verlag has produced a limited-edition of ex libris multiples, and a collector’s edition accompanied by a unique work.


 


For her “metabook”, Louise Bourgeois chose a historical publication written by the French midwife Louyse Bourgeois, known as La Boursier. Renowned for attending the birth of Queen Marie de’ Medici’s son, the future Louis XIII, La Boursier authored one of the earliest French obstetrical treatises to incorporate anatomical observations, becoming the first woman in France to publish a medical text. Her treatise unfolds as a detailed account of observations and practices concerning sterility, miscarriage, fertility, childbirth, and diseases affecting women and newborns.


 


Louise Bourgeois’s intervention is deliberately restrained: rather than altering the historical text, she “undusts” it through three contemporary drawings: a newly designed cover and back cover and an evocative ex libris. Through this subtle act of recontextualization, Bourgeois invites the reader to reconsider the historical treatise through the lens of contemporary discourses surrounding female corporeality and its representation.
