This cameraless project marks a major step in former Magnum photographer Luc Delahaye’s move towards paraphotography, signalling his formal adoption of the artist’s book as a medium.
Conceived as an archive of postmodern conflict (sic!), What’s Going On, completed in 2025, documents recent history through 693 newspaper cutouts, primarily from The New York Times and Le Monde. Entirely photographic, the book unfolds as an unsettling meditation on violence, whether immediate or distant. In this atlas of contemporary turmoil, some photographs confront us with a mirror, while others open a window onto the world – or onto chaos, as Cornelius Castoriadis might have called it.
The final image in this visual profusion is a pictorial detail depicting Hercules or Atlas struggling to bear the weight of the world. It opens a self-referential parenthesis, inviting us to consider how this substantial book itself bears the burden of contemporary disorder.
