Wild History (announcement card)
Richard Prince [Ed.]
N.d. [1984]
New York: Tanam Press
Postcard, printed recto and verso; postmarked, stamped and addressed
11 × 15.3 cm

This postcard, printed by Tanam Press, was sent to the poet Kenneth Irby in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1984 to announce the forthcoming anthology Wild History, compiled by Richard Prince.

Like many of Prince’s conceptual works from the early 1980s, Wild History encapsulates the countercultural vibe of New York’s underground cultural scene. It features writings and stories by Prince himself, alongside contributions by other artists and writers, including Tina Lhotsky, Spalding Gray, Glenn O’Brien, Kathy Acker, and Gary Indiana, among others. Each story is paired with a “portrait” of its respective author. Prince provided photographs for some of the contributors (such as Kathy Acker, Peter Nadin, and Reese Williams), while other images – such as the portrait of Lynne Tillman – were taken by photographers like Nan Goldin.

On its verso, the postcard features a loosely reworked quotation from Antonio Gramsci’s Notebooks (written in the 1930s), appropriated and adapted by Prince:

“No one said: that what one really is, is knowing oneself as a product of a historical process to date which has deposited in you an infinity of traces without leaving an inventory; the job of producing an inventory is the first necessity. Or, that many people find their way to the general through the personal, the individual.”

Wild History is apparently also the title of a 2016 documentary about Richard Prince, directed by Peter Sutherland and featuring Larry Gagosian, Jeff Koons, Nate Lowman, Glenn O’Brien, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, Neville Wakefield, Dan Colen, and Pamela Anderson. A rather impressive cast for a film that seems to have vanished in the metaverse without a trace.
